Castle Douglas hosted the Stewartry v Glasgow East county match on Saturday. After a good win in week 1 the Stewartry team were looking to follow this up with another strong performance. Creetown fail to progress to the Quarter Finals of the Scottish Top Ten. After a very close game last week Creetown had hope that they would manage to get an other result in the Ceramic Tile Warehouse sponsored tournament but a disaster of a last bowl by Alan McClymont the fours skip allowed Ayr to win the match.
The singles was a hard fought affair, with Creetown’s Marin McClymont having the better start and lead 8-2 after 5 ends. Ayr’s Nail Davey then had a good run and after 10 ends lead 10-9 and after 15 ends 18-10. Martin then had a good spell and after 20 eds had got the score level at 19-19. Two singles then saw Martin win at 21-19.
The Creetown pair of Rab Monteith and Alisair Herries had a far harder task on their hands today, the Ayr pair of A. Fulton and S. Reid played very well. The ends won was close 8 Creetown - 9 Ayr but 4 of the ends won by Ayr were 4’s. After 5 ends it was 4-5, after 10 it was 6-16 and after 15 it was 14-20 and finnished Creetown 14 Ayr 23.
The triples was a close game from start to finish The Creetown triple of Jim Maginnes, Charlie Wilson & Ian Carter lead 7-6 after 5 ends, were one done at 10-11 after 10 ends but lead 15-13 going in to the last end. With only Ian’s last bowl to come Ayr were lying game and some exciting things going on on the next rink where the fours were playing.
The Creetown four of Eddie McCulloch, Eck Houston, Stuart McClymont and Alan McClymont found it hard going against Ayr and after 6 ends were 2-8 down but a six in the next end got them back into the game at 8 -8. After 10 ends Ayr lead 12 -10 and after 16 ends were 20-16 up. With the results across the green the Creetown fours needed to get a four in the last end to tie their game and hope the triples would hold on and win. Creetown were lying the four they required for a draw but on the next rink the triple were lying game against them, so Alan tried to draw an other shot with his last bowl to win his game and hope that the triples could salvage a draw. Unfortunately he was a wee bit tight and turned in a Ayr bowl for second shot!!!!and lost 17-20.
Ian Carter then hit the head in the triples and shifted thing and only lost one shot and the triples won by one shot 15-14. Hindsight is a wonderful thing IF Alan had not played his last bowl and IF Ian had still got the same connection the result would have been Creetown 5 Ayr 3.
